HD DSLR Workshops Introduction
HD DSLR Workshops are cinematography/filmmaking courses which focus on the Canon digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, revolving mostly around the Canon 5D Mark II. The workshops specifically focus on the high-definition (HD) video capabilities of the camera, and the cameras practical use for film production. Our courses are taught by professionals in the film industry, several of whom currently work on major network Televison shows, and have extensive backgrounds working in the business. Our front man is cinematographer Gale Tattersall, who is one of the top DP’s in the world, and has been a professional camera man for roughly 30 years.

Our courses are designed to be highly hands on, and every student gets to pick up a camera and shoot video on each day of our workshops. We have the highest instructor to student ratio of any workshops available at roughly 3 to 1. Our workshops are sponsored by Canon who provide us with their top HD DSLR cameras. We are sponsored by several third party support companies who provide us with many rigs and accessories. We provide instruction on these items and they are available to all of our students to use (Glidecam, Libec Tripods and jibs, Red-rock Micro accessories, Marshall Monitors, Cineroid EVF – Electronic View Finder).

A highlight in our course is day two where we focus on lighting. This is taught by Gale Tattersall, who imparts his thirty years of experience, knowledge, and tricks to achieve professional and artistic lighting. We show students the most economic, and alternative ways to create beautiful lighting without the need to use expensive film lighting.

On the final day of our workshops we shoot a commercially viable product, either a commercial for a small business or a music video for an up and coming musician or band. Students and instructors take part in shooting this final project side by side.

Overall we provide the most extensive and complete course to learn how to use prosumer HD DSLR cameras to make films. No other HD DSLR course, or film course in general, provides students with an opportunity to sit with professional filmmakers, who are currently working in the industry, as they freely impart their knowledge, and shoot professional material under their guidance, all in a thirty-hour course over three days.

Level One Workshop
Gale will be assisted by a talented team of filmmakers and photographers with a wide range of knowledge in all the fields of film-making. In addition, every student will get the chance to work in small groups with each instructor, as well as one-on-one time with Gale himself. 5D mark II cameras will be available for students to experience hands-on, as well as all the equipment that Gale uses regularly on set.

Each of the three days will revolve around a different aspect of the cinematographic process for which both the technical and creative sides of using these new digital tools will be explored. Students can expect to learn how to use the basic and advanced functions of the camera, lighting, shooting, and the film making process from concept to creation. As we mentioned, the final class will offer the students a collaborative opportunity to take the concepts and skills they have learned throughout the course and create a commercially viable product utilizing the student content.

What to Bring
You don’t have to bring anything. All students will have access to Canon cameras with all necessary accessories, motion rigs, lights, off-camera monitors and all the newest in state of the art equipment. Breakfast and Lunch are provided to all workshop participants.
